I’ve been in the world of tech for nearly 20 years. I started my career at Microsoft when smartphones were just becoming a “thing.” At Microsoft, our goal was to build technology to empower people to be connected, “anytime, anywhere and from any device.” At that time, I never dreamed the world I was helping create would be one where we’re connected everywhere, all the time and from any device we can get our hands on.
It is only in recent years that my affair with technology has become more of a love/hate relationship and a full-time balancing act. Technology has enabled us to do some pretty cool things. It has given me the flexibility to work from home for much of my career and it’s also empowered me to work around the clock with no time to disconnect.
It’s my belief that technology doesn’t need to rule us, but it easily can and is often doing just that. Walk into any coffee shop in any part of the world and what do we see? Mostly faces looking down into whatever device is in hand. Children are now pacified with phones as soon as they are old enough to grasp one and couples at dinner stare into phone screens rather than into one another’s eyes. And, what about our forgotten manners when we’re distracted by our devices?
My goal is to create a forum for discussion around the new normal we’re creating. It’s time we lift our eyes up and decide if this new norm we’re creating together is one we really like.
I hope you’ll join the conversation and share your stories.
